Spring Joust at Hedingham Castle

Updated: Feb 1

I attended Hedingham Castle's Spring Joust over the Bank Holiday and wanted to share with you our experience and my images. We met our friends there and we were ready to explore!

Family Fun

Firstly our boys had a go at Jousting! They loved this as they got to climb up on top of a mechanical horse, they were given a wooden lance to hold and they were all set. The aim was to collect the rings as the "horse" moved along with your Lance! You had two turns each so if you missed the first time you had a second chance. Great fun!

Axe Throwing and Archery

We then moved onto the Axe throwing, There was a height restriction with this event and the boys were slightly under the height they had to be to participate. I think you had to be 8 years old or older as well, understandably! The boys will have to try that next year! This didn't deter us having fun as we joined the short queue for the Archery. The boys were lead down to an instructor and he patiently showed them how to use the bow and arrows. They both got their intended targets. The adults in our group also had a go. The fun isn't just for children!

Birds of Prey Display By "Eden Falconry"

We headed over to Eden Falconry. Andy gave a very informative talk and we watched their captivating display of beautiful birds, including Toffee the Barn Owl and Pippin the Kestrel among others.

A Barbaric Battle

All the children were then invited to take part in an epic battle! Brilliantly organised and so entertaining. The children and some adults got completely immersed!

The Joust then followed and it did not disappoint! Daring stunts some involving fire, hoops being caught in mid air, sword fights and the Jousting battle was amazing. All carried out with spectacular showmanship and camaraderie between the performers it made for a very believable re enactment. The medieval costumes that the knights and horses were draped in were fabulous. I took many photos but we could be here for a long time if I showed you them all, so I have chosen a few of my favorite images. If you get a chance to see them perform its brilliant!
